Jig head sizing is one of those things that sounds technical but comes down to two questions: how deep am I fishing, and what am I trying to imitate?
Get the weight wrong and you're either dragging bottom when you shouldn't be, or floating above the strike zone. Get the hook size wrong and you're missing fish or your plastic baits simply won't work.

Quick Reference: Jig Head Weight by Depth
This chart assumes moderate current and wind conditions. Add weight in heavy current or wind; go lighter in calm, clear water.
| Water Depth | Recommended Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 ft | 1/32 – 1/8 oz | Ultra-shallow, slow fall priority |
| 4–8 ft | 1/16 – 1/4 oz | Finesse, light current |
| 6–12 ft | 1/4 – 1/2 oz | Most versatile range |
| 10–18 ft | 3/8 – 3/4 oz | Standard depth, moderate current |
| 15–25 ft | 1/2 – 1 oz | Deep structure |
| 25 ft+ | 3/4 – 1 oz+ | Deep water, strong current |
Forward Facing Sonar:
- 1/16–1/8 oz
- Fishing suspended fish over deep water (8–30 ft+)
- 4–7" baits or Urchin Style lures
Current and wind adjustment:
- Light current/wind: Use base weight
- Moderate: Add 1 weight tier
- Heavy: Add 2 weight tiers or more
Jig Head Hook Size by Plastic Bait Length
Hook size should match bait size — not species size. A small hook in a big plastic produces terrible hookups. A big hook in a small plastic kills the action.
| Bait Length | Hook Size | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 – 2.5" | #1 – 1/0 | Crappie, bluegill, trout |
| 2.5 – 3.5" | 1/0 – 2/0 | Finesse bass, speckled trout, crappie |
| 3 – 4" | 2/0 – 3/0 | Inshore saltwater, finesse bass |
| 4 – 5" | 3/0 – 4/0 | Bass, redfish, flounder, trout, walleye, stripers |
| 5 – 6" | 4/0 – 5/0 | Bigger bass, bigger redfish, trout, walleye, snook, stripers |
| 6"+ | 5/0 – 7/0 | Offshore, big inshore, musky, pike, trophy species |
Jig Head Size by Target Species

How to Dial In the Right Weight on the Water
The chart above gives you a starting point. Here's how to fine-tune it in real time:
Step 1: Can you feel bottom?
If you can't tell when your bait hits bottom, you need more weight and or lighter line. Bottom contact is how you stay in the strike zone on a drag presentation.
Step 2: Are you dragging too much?
If the bait feels heavy and is plowing bottom on every pull, go lighter. You want to stay in contact but not usually acting as an anchor.
Step 3: How long is the fall taking?
A good rule: your bait should reach bottom in 3–6 seconds from casting distance in average depth. Much faster and you're too heavy. Much longer and you may be too light for the presentation.
Step 4: What's the current doing?
Moving current pushes your line and bait upcurrent of your weight. In heavy current, you need more weight to stay vertical — even in shallow water.
Step 5: How are fish responding to the fall?
If fish are consistently hitting on the fall and you're missing them, consider going lighter so the fall is slower. More time in the zone = more bites.
Wire Gauge: What It Means and Why It Matters
Jig head hooks come in different wire gauges — this affects both penetration and strength.
| Gauge | Best For | Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|
| Light wire | Soft plastics, finesse, light-hitting species | Less durable on big fish |
| Standard (1x) | General purpose, most applications | Decent strength/penetration |
| Heavy wire (2x–3x) | Big fish, heavy cover, live bait | Most reliable |
The ATV Weedless Hover Hook runs 1x (lighter wire) for easier penetration through soft plastics and a better feel on lighter bites. The Upgrade Multipurpose Hover Hook runs 2x — enough backbone for saltwater fish without compromising set.
Color: Does Jig Head Color Matter?
Honestly? Less than most marketers would have you believe. But here's what we know:
Clear / lightly stained water: Unpainted lead, silver, or white. Subtle.
Stained / dark water: Chartreuse, orange, or bright painted heads. Visibility.
Matching the hatch: Olive, brown, and natural tones when fishing natural bottom colors.
Most situations: The depth and speed in which your lure is moving matters more than the head or bait color.
On the Upgrade lineup, black nickel finish is clean, doesn't oxidize, and doesn't introduce a color contrast that can look unnatural. Simple. Effective.
The Bottom Line
The right jig head is the one matched to your depth, your current, and your bait. Start with the chart. Adjust based on feel. Trust your instincts when the chart doesn't match what the fish are telling you.
If you're in shallow to mid-depth water — 0 to 12 feet — the Upgrade Hover Hook covers most of what you need. The 1/16 and 3/32 oz options bracket the core finesse range where the horizontal fall makes the biggest difference.
