Peacock bass don't play games. If you've ever thrown a generic swimbait at a peacock in South Florida and watched it flare up, look, and turn away — you already know. These fish want something that looks like it's trying to escape, smells like it's real, and twitches like it's alive. How I Fish It for Peacocks
My go-to setup for Florida peacocks is a 3/8 oz or 1/2 oz Upgrade Jig Head paired with the 4" Jerk ShadZ™ in natural baitfish colors — Pearl, Sexy Mullet, or any chartreuse-tail option near dirty water. Here's the retrieve that gets bites:
- Cast past the target — a dock piling, a shade line, a rock wall
- Let it sink 2-3 feet
- Sharp rip upward, pause, let it flutter down
- Repeat. The pause is where most hits happen
Peacocks will follow it and eat on the drop or slam it on the rip. Either way, don't hesitate on the hookset — these fish have tough mouths and they'll try to rip the bait right back at you.
Where to Target Peacocks in Florida
South Florida is the best (and really only) spot in the continental US for peacock bass. Key areas I've had success:
- Miami-Dade canals — C-111, Tamiami Canal, any residential canal with docks
- Broward County lakes — Clear water, good sight fishing for peacocks in the 3-6 lb range
- Everglades edges — Bigger fish, more structure, tougher access
Early morning and late afternoon are prime time. Peacocks are most active in warm, sunny conditions — unlike bass that can turn off in the heat, peacocks are tropical fish and love the Florida summer.
