The best jighead for TPE and other stretchy soft-plastic baits depends on how and where you’re fishing.
Quick Answer
A good TPE-compatible jighead or weighted hook should hold highly elastic material securely, keep the bait properly aligned, use a hook that matches the bait and target species, and provide the right amount of weight for the presentation.
That’s also why there isn’t one jighead that’s best for every situation.
At Ebb N Flow Outdoors, we’ve developed The Upgrade family around five different applications:
| Product | What it’s built for |
|---|---|
| Multi-Purpose Jighead | Exposed-hook versatility for swimming, jigging and general-purpose freshwater and inshore fishing. |
| Hover Hook | A light, belly-weighted 2X hook for horizontal, slow-fall and finesse presentations. |
| A.T.V. Weedless Swinghead | An extra-wide-gap weedless jighead for grass, wood, oyster, docks and other snag-prone cover. |
| A.T.V. Weedless Hover Hook | A light, weedless EWG option for horizontal presentations around cover. |
| Ned Rig | A compact 1/4-ounce, 1/0-hook presentation designed specifically for Ned-style and smaller finesse plastics. |
The common idea behind the family is simple: match the hook and weight to the bait, cover and presentation instead of forcing one jighead to do everything.
Why Are TPE Soft Plastics Different?
TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer.
Fishing baits made from highly elastic materials can stretch dramatically farther than conventional soft plastics and often survive multiple fish.
That’s a huge advantage.
But elasticity also changes how the material behaves when you put it on a hook or jighead.
A conventional plastisol bait can often be pushed over a large molded collar or barb and stay there.
Highly elastic material may stretch around that same keeper, bunch behind the jighead or gradually work its way down the hook.
That’s why keeper design and placement matter with TPE.
What Should You Look for in a Jighead for TPE?
Don’t choose a jighead based on the word “TPE” alone.
Look at the entire system.
1. Bait Retention
The bait should stay where you rigged it.
A keeper that is too bulky can make an elastic bait difficult to install. A keeper that’s too small or poorly positioned may allow the bait to slide.
The goal isn’t the largest possible keeper.
The goal is secure retention without destroying the bait’s profile or action.
2. Straight Rigging
This gets overlooked constantly.
A great soft plastic rigged crooked on a great jighead can still fish poorly.
Before casting, look directly down the bait. The body should follow the hook naturally without twisting to either side.
This is particularly important with paddletails and swimming baits because poor alignment can cause the entire bait to roll.
3. Hook Size
Match the hook to the bait—not simply the jighead weight.
A hook that’s too short may reduce your hookup percentage.
A hook that’s unnecessarily long can interfere with the action you’re trying to create.
That’s one reason The Upgrade family uses several different hook styles and sizes instead of putting the same hook on every product.
4. Hook Strength
Think about what happens after something eats the bait.
Finesse doesn’t necessarily mean fragile.
Our original Multi-Purpose Jighead and Hover Hook were designed as freshwater/saltwater crossover products and use 2X hooks because we wanted enough strength for bass while still being comfortable putting them in front of redfish, trout and other inshore species.
Other members of The Upgrade family use different hook configurations because their intended applications are different.
5. Weight and Weight Placement
Weight doesn’t only determine depth.
It affects fall rate, swimming angle, horizontal presentation, bottom contact, casting distance, current control and bait action.
And where the weight sits on the hook matters too.
That’s especially important when comparing a traditional jighead with a belly-weighted Hover Hook or the nose-forward weighting of the A.T.V. Weedless Hover.
Which Upgrade Should You Use?
This is where understanding the family becomes useful.
The Upgrade Multi-Purpose Jighead
Best for: General-purpose exposed-hook fishing.
This is the original Upgrade and the most versatile starting point in the family.
It combines a tapered profile, stabilization keel, 60-degree line tie, 3D eye, bait-retention system and a 2X black nickel Mustad hook.
It’s designed for both traditional and highly elastic soft plastics and can be used for freshwater and inshore saltwater applications.
Current sizes range from lighter presentations through heavier applications, allowing the same basic design to cover substantially different depths and species.
Choose the Multi-Purpose when you want to swim a paddletail, work a soft plastic around relatively open structure, bounce bottom or simply need a strong exposed-hook jighead.

The Upgrade Hover Hook
Best for: Finesse, suspended fish, forward-facing sonar, umbrella rigs and slow horizontal presentations.
The Hover moves the weight away from a conventional jighead position and places it along the hook.
That helps the bait maintain a more horizontal profile and creates a different fall than a traditional nose-weighted jighead.
The Upgrade Hover uses a 3/0 2X black nickel Mustad hook and is offered in 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 ounce weights.
It’s particularly useful with straight-tail plastics, jerk-style baits and other presentations where you don’t necessarily want the nose-heavy action of a traditional jighead.
It can also be used beyond bass fishing, including certain live-bait and inshore presentations.
The Upgrade A.T.V. Weedless Swinghead
Best for: Grass, oyster, timber, docks and other cover where an exposed hook becomes a liability.
The A.T.V. is the all-terrain member of the family.
Instead of an exposed jig hook, it uses an extra-wide-gap hook that allows the soft plastic to be rigged Texas-style with the hook point protected inside or against the bait.
It’s currently offered in:
| Weight | Hook size |
|---|---|
| 1/8 oz | 2/0 |
| 1/4 oz | 3/0 |
| 3/8 oz | 4/0 |
Use the A.T.V. when you still want a weighted soft-plastic presentation but need to get through cover that would repeatedly grab an exposed hook.

The Upgrade A.T.V. Weedless Hover Hook
Best for: Combining a light horizontal presentation with weedless rigging.
This is where two ideas within The Upgrade family come together.
The A.T.V. Weedless Hover uses an extra-wide-gap hook for Texas-style rigging but maintains a light, strategically positioned weight designed for a slow, horizontal presentation.
It is currently offered in 3/32 ounce with 2/0 and 4/0 hook options.
This can be an excellent choice when fish are suspended around vegetation, dock pilings or other cover where you want Hover-style presentation without leaving an exposed hook point.
It’s also useful as a simple lightly weighted fluke-style hook when you want more control than an unweighted hook without jumping all the way to a conventional jighead.

The Upgrade Ned Rig
Best for: Compact bottom-oriented finesse presentations.
The newest member of The Upgrade family is our 1/4-ounce Ned Rig built around a 1/0 2X black nickel hook.
It’s designed for smaller Ned-style plastics and compact finesse presentations where the larger hooks used throughout much of The Upgrade family aren’t appropriate.
The initial online release is available in three colors:
- Fluoro Yellow with Prism Eye
- Black with Prism Eye
- Watermelon Green with Red Flake and Red Eye
The Ned fills an important gap in The Upgrade system.
Sometimes you don’t need a larger paddletail jighead, weedless EWG hook or hovering presentation.
You need a compact bait sitting near the bottom in front of a fish that doesn’t want much.
That’s where the Ned belongs.
How Do You Choose Between All Five?
Start with the presentation rather than the product name.
| If you’re… | Reach for… |
|---|---|
| Swimming a paddletail or fishing an exposed hook | The Multi-Purpose Jighead |
| After a slow, horizontal finesse presentation | The Hover Hook |
| Fishing grass, wood, oyster or heavy cover | The A.T.V. Weedless Swinghead |
| Needing both weedless protection and a light horizontal presentation | The A.T.V. Weedless Hover |
| Fishing a small Ned-style bait along the bottom | The Upgrade Ned Rig |
That’s ultimately what The Upgrade family is supposed to accomplish.
We’re not trying to convince anglers that one jighead magically does everything.
We’re building a system of purpose-driven jigheads and weighted hooks that allows an angler to change presentations without abandoning the basic design principles behind The Upgrade.
Which Upgrade Is Best for Z-Man and Other TPE Baits?
That depends on the individual bait.
A paddletail or minnow-style bait may pair naturally with the Multi-Purpose Jighead.
A straight-tail or jerk-style bait may be better suited to the Hover.
A soft plastic you’re trying to work through grass or oyster may call for one of the A.T.V. weedless designs.
A small TRD-style bait belongs naturally on the Ned Rig.
That’s a much better way to think about TPE compatibility than asking whether one hook works with every stretchy bait ever made.
Choose the presentation first. Then match the Upgrade to it.

Freshwater or Saltwater?
The Upgrade family was born from fishing both.
That crossover is intentional.
A bass angler may use a Hover Hook around suspended fish one day.
An inshore angler may use the Multi-Purpose Jighead with a paddletail for redfish the next.
A weedless A.T.V. may be worked through freshwater vegetation or across an oyster bar.
The correct product still depends on hook size, weight, cover, bait and target species.
But we don’t believe an angler’s tackle has to fit neatly into a “freshwater” or “saltwater” box.
Are TPE Baits Better Than Traditional Soft Plastics?
Not necessarily.
We fish both.
TPE-style baits can offer tremendous elasticity and durability.
Traditional plastisol baits offer their own advantages in softness, action, formulation, scent and variety.
The real question isn’t which material wins. It’s: does your jighead work correctly with the bait you’re trying to fish?
If the bait rigs straight, stays secured, maintains its intended action and gives you the hook and weight required for the situation, you’ve built the right system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use TPE soft plastics on a normal jighead?
Yes. Plenty of conventional jigheads work with highly elastic soft plastics. The important questions are whether the bait can be rigged straight, whether the keeper holds it securely and whether the hook and weight match your application.
Why does my stretchy soft plastic keep sliding down the hook?
Keeper design, keeper position, bait damage, improper rigging and mismatched hook size can all contribute. Inspect how the bait is actually engaging the keeper before assuming the bait itself is the problem.
Which Upgrade is the most versatile?
The Multi-Purpose Jighead is designed to cover the broadest range of conventional jighead applications. The other four products become more specialized when you need hover action, weedless protection or a compact Ned presentation.
Which Upgrade should I use around grass?
Start with one of the A.T.V. weedless models when snag resistance is a priority.
Which Upgrade should I use for forward-facing sonar?
The Hover Hook and A.T.V. Weedless Hover are designed around horizontal, finesse-style presentations that can be particularly useful when targeting suspended fish with forward-facing sonar.
Which Upgrade should I use with a Ned bait?
The 1/4-ounce Upgrade Ned Rig uses a compact 1/0 hook specifically for smaller Ned-style and finesse plastics.
Can The Upgrade family be used in saltwater?
Several members were specifically developed with freshwater/inshore crossover use in mind. Always rinse terminal tackle after saltwater use and choose the hook, weight and rigging style appropriate for the species and cover you’re fishing.
The Bottom Line
There isn’t one “best jighead” for every TPE bait because there isn’t one fishing situation.
The better approach is to match bait material, bait size, hook style, hook strength, weight, cover and presentation.
That’s why The Upgrade from Ebb N Flow Outdoors is a family rather than a single jighead.
Five products. Five different jobs.
- Multi-Purpose — versatile exposed-hook fishing.
- Hover — finesse and horizontal presentation.
- A.T.V. Weedless — all-terrain weedless fishing.
- A.T.V. Weedless Hover — weedless finesse and horizontal presentation.
- Ned Rig — compact bottom-oriented finesse fishing.
Different tools built around the same idea:
Keep the bait where it belongs, give it the action you want, and put the right hook in front of the fish.
